The Gain:  Even though a nurse should know better, Brown ate for two during her first pregnancy - and gained 55 pounds. "I was so happy and excited about my baby that I didn't use common sense when it came to eating right," she says. When son Nate was just 7 months old, Brown got pregnant again. After her daughter, Elizabeth, was born, Brown's weight settled at 205.

 

The Change:  A year later, Brown was sick of always feeling exhausted. "I was on my feet all day at work, and by the time I got home I had no energy for my children." Realizing that her excess pounds were to blame, she left the kids with her parents one night and went to a weight watchers meeting.

 

The Life:  "I learned the basics for healthy weight loss," she says. "Portion control - something I'd never thought about before. Eating healthier foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. And eating when I was hungry, instead of out of habit." Brown used a food scale to keep tabs on her portions and began eating five small meals rather than three large ones to steady her energy level throughout the day. "It wasn't that big of an adjustment," she says. "With two young kids, I didn't have the luxury to sit down and eat a large meal anyway." 

She carried a cooler of healthy meals to work and avoided the fat traps in the hospital cafeteria. A month later, she was 12 pounds lighter and more energetic: "I wasn't collapsing into bed at the end of the day," she says. And she became even more determined to take the rest of the weight off. So she began walking on the treadmill and doing a light strength-training routine at a local gym that offered child care. As she continued to lose weight and build stamina, she added spinning classes and elliptical training. "I started losing 2 to 3 pounds a week and felt amazing." After 11 months, Brown hit 130 - 20 pounds lower than her pre-pregnancy weight.

 

The Reward:  "Reaching my weight-loss goal has taught me that I can accomplish anything I set my mind and body to. Nothing is impossible."

 

Heather's Tips:

- Experiment in the kitchen. "When I started losing weight, I pored over cookbooks and swapped recipes with other members. Healthy food can really be delicious."

 

- Be prepared. "Keep nutritious snacks on hand at all times so you don't feel tempted to eat junk food. Look for ones that are high in fiber - they'll help you stay full longer."

 

- Don't beat yourself up. "If you get off track one day, let it go and start again the next day."

The turning point:  After my second daughter was born, I was so overweight that I couldn’t look in the mirror without crying. I knew something had to be done. I needed to be the active mother my girls deserved.

 

The slim-down techniques:  Portion control!  I started weighing and measuring everything. I also began reading labels and drinking more water - 64 ounces a day.

 

Kept the weight off:  One year.

Best motivator:  Because of my family medical history, I know that I have to keep the weight off to stay healthy.

 

Greatest temptation:  Chocolate and anything sweet… I’m a chocaholic!

Exercise routine:  I stay active by keeping up with the house and running around with my two young children.

Cindy's challenge:  Cindy's weight had yo-yoed for years (she'd lost and then gained the same 40 pounds again and again), but after three pregnancies her weight climbed to 241. "I couldn't believe how heavy I'd become!" she says. "I knew I had to find a way to get to a healthy weight and stay there."

 

The turning point:  Seven weeks after her youngest child was born, Cindy and her neighbor took a slow half-hour walk around the neighborhood. On their return home they made a pact to meet up on a regular basis starting the next day. "Exercising with someone else seemed to keep me motivated," Cindy says. "I'd jump out of bed at 6:30 a.m. since I knew she was waiting to walk with me." They gradually doubled their route and then mixed in bike rides. On rainy mornings Cindy substituted a workout video. Within four months she was down to 180 pounds.

 

Weight-loss and exercise plan:  Cindy also committed to changing the eating habits she'd developed during back-to-back pregnancies. "I figured I was eating for two and had let my life

become a food free-for-all," she says. "I gravitated toward all the things I was raised on: pasta, fried food and heavy desserts." So she began stocking her refrigerator with fresh produce and cleared the kitchen cabinets of junk food. "I didn't feel deprived, because I ate sensibly," she says. "I traded microwave pancakes for whole-wheat English muffins, and if I wanted chocolate, I added a few M&M's to my trail mix."

 

She dropped another 15 pounds in two months, but then she hit a plateau. Since her neighbor had less time to exercise, Cindy decided to join a gym. "A trainer told me I might be stuck at 165 pounds because I'd been following the same exercise regimen for months," she says. "Once I began lifting free weights and swimming, I started losing again."

 

Making success happen:  Cindy then switched her focus to portion control. "I became more aware of how much I was eating when I measured out a cup of cereal or counted Goldfish Crackers," she says. "And at meals, I ate more salads, lean steaks and hamburgers without the bun." Within a year she was down to 138 pounds. "I can't believe how much I've been able to accomplish," she says. "I've never felt so confident in my life!"

 

Motivation secrets:

- Accept a compliment. "My husband's always telling me how sexy I look, and hearing that definitely keeps me going!"
